Emphasizing Sustainability This Autumn

No matter the season, there are simple steps we all can take to conserve energy, to reduce waste, and to care for the environment we live in. As the leaves start to turn and Halloween decor begins to make its appearance, consider a few autumn-specific strategies to live more sustainably.

How to Live More Sustainably This Fall

1) Take care of your leaves.

As red, yellow, and orange leaves begin piling up on your lawn and driveway, remember that there’s no substitute for a good old-fashioned rake; leaf blowers, while convenient, also wind up wasting an awful lot of energy. Also keep in mind that your leaves, once raked into a pile, can be added to enrich your mulch or your compost pile, a great way to emphasize sustainability.

2) Mind the thermostat.

In most parts of the country, the start of fall means brisk weather. You may be tempted to crank your thermostat but remember that leaving it set to 67 or 68 can dramatically reduce the energy you use, not only helping the environment but also lowering your utility bills. And hey, you can always put on a sweater or grab an extra blanket!

3) Bring outside plants back in.

Save your house plants from getting killed off by chilly weather. In doing so, you’ll also be adding some natural greenery and air purification to your home.

4) Visit a local farm.

Shopping local produce is a great thing to do any time of the year, as it helps cut back on the costly and fuel-inefficient methods used to process and deliver food from other parts of the country. But it can be especially fun to visit pick-your-own farms during fall. Take your family along to scout out lovely apples, pumpkins, perhaps even nuts such as pecans and walnuts.

5) Practice green cleaning.

During the autumn season, you’ll likely devote some time to deep cleaning your home, getting it ready for seasonal meals, parties, and gatherings. Make sure you avoid using cleaning products that are made with harmful or toxic chemicals. Consider “eco-friendly” products from the store, or better yet, stick with natural options like lemon, vinegar, and baking soda.
